Obesity and Back Pain Often Belong Together November 2, 2008

An increasing amountof Americans are becoming dangerously overweight or obese, every year. Youths, adults and the elderly are all losing the fight with obesity, often due to increasing fast food, bad eating habits and lack of regular physical exercise. The more overweight you are, the greater are the risks for your health. The main health risks related to obesity include heart disease, often fatal, elevated blood pressure, some types of cancers and various varieties of joint and muscle pains, as well as back pain that is caused by the extra weight load that your body needs to support. You could end up with many different kinds of ailments, all of which could result in chronic back pain. For instance: osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, degenerative disc disease, spondylolisthesis and spinal stenosis, to name just a few. That aformentionned does not even make mention of all of the disc related problems that might also develop.

An important purpose of your spine is to support your body and separate your weight evenly on all of the other joints and muscles. The higher the weight that your spine has to carry and support, the more stress there is on it and the more prone to damage it will become, especially the lower part of your back, also known as the lumbar region. If you don’t exercise on a regular basis, which is likely if you are overweight, your back and thigh muscles weaken, often leading to a curved spine and exacerbated back pain. This might also get worse if you have a faulty back posture.

The only guaranteed way to drop weight is to try to eat a healthier diet, reduce your intake of calories, and exercise on a regular basis. It is difficult for someone who is obese to realistically find any kind of effective physical exercise, so if you are part of this category of people, you should consult your doctor for recommendations, and follow his advice. You might find that you have trouble getting enough oxygen during exercise, or that your muscles hurt, but that should not stop you exercising at the first sign of pain, or you will not lose weight and stay in pain from now on. The more exercise your flaccid muscles get, the more they will be able to recover, including your back. Your spinal discs will begin secreting nutrients once again, healing your spine, and helping to ease your back pain.

You must make surenot to try any fad diets, or consume any of the counter diet pills, as these might help you to lose weight for a short while, but you are likely to just put it all back again when you stop taking them. The best solution is a healthy combination of exercise and diet if you want to get rid of your muscle, back and joint pain for good. The more weight you drop, the more strength you will recover into your muscles and bones, allowing you to do more physical exercise. Continue your new healthy lifestyle, even after you have managed to reach your desired body weight, this will prevent the same kinds of problems from developing again.
